Exercise 08.10: Linespacing

Goal

The goal of this exercise is to learn the basic visual and technical principles associated with leading (linespacing) in the digital production environment and print based output.

Objective

By setting type to very specific settings using InDesign, you will become familiar with the adjustments associated with linespacing.

Background Reading

  • Dabner, p 62–91.
  • Kane, p 76–113.

Exercise

Create two digital files that contrast various leading settings.

Part One

Using your assigned typeface, create a letter-sized document, single page, with 3p margins. Create a text box extending to the each margin. Place the “exer08_10_text.zip” file into the box. Size your typeface to 18 pt. Set the leading of the first line to 9 pt. Gradually increase your leading one (1) point at a time until the type is set solid, and then positive, and, finally, double the point size. Print your file in black and white. Create a PDF and place it in the appropriate dropbox on the course D2L server.

Part Two

Create a new document labeled “part02.” This time set the baseline grid to 3 pt. Using your assigned typeface, create a letter-sized document, single page, with 3p margins. Create a text box extending to the each margin. Place the “exer08_10_text.zip” file into the box. Set this box to “Lock to the Baseline Grid.” Size your typeface to 18 pt. Set the leading of the first line to 9 pt. Gradually increase your leading one (1) point at a time until the type is set solid, and then positive, and, finally, double the point size. Print your file in black and white. Create a PDF and place it in the appropriate dropbox on the course D2L server.
