Assignment 03.07: Environmental Graphics

Goal

The goal of the assign­ment is to dis­cover the para­me­ters, oppor­tu­ni­ties and prac­ti­cal­i­ties of cre­at­ing envi­ron­men­tal graph­ics and wayfind­ing sys­tems, as well as work­ing in a team com­posed of sev­eral members.

Objective

Cre­ate vir­tual and phys­i­cal mock­ups of pro­posed pro­gram or exhibit wall and case graphic sys­tems for final review. Group mem­bers col­lab­o­rate and share workloads.

Assignment

Work­ing from images and tours of phys­i­cal space, develop a plan for cre­at­ing pro­mo­tional and or infor­ma­tional graph­ics rep­re­sent­ing the client-based con­tent. Cre­ate a needs analy­sis report that out­lines the major audi­ence, goals and bench­marks to mea­sure suc­cess of the pro­jec­t’s even­tual pro­duc­tion. Use that needs analy­sis to define a pro­posed sched­ule for completion.

Cre­ate a nec­es­sary design solu­tions and files nec­es­sary to ful­fill the solu­tion. Use the cumu­la­tive knowl­edge and method­olo­gies to solve any and all design and con­tent chal­lenges. Inves­ti­gate inter­ac­tive and expe­ri­ence based solutions.

Keep the ideas cre­ative, focus­ing on the mul­ti­ple audi­ences. Solu­tions should explore the pos­si­bil­i­ties, and not be lim­ited by to many prac­ti­cal con­cerns at the ini­tial stage.

As is often the case with large projects, the final prod­uct will require input and assis­tance from a vari­ety of pro­fes­sion­als across sev­eral dis­ci­plines and trades. These projects often last beyond indi­vid­ual involve­ment, so direc­tions and doc­u­men­ta­tion regard­ing spec­i­fi­ca­tions is vital. (updated 10.28.2024).

Part One

Develop a rough plan using paper mate­ri­als and source images. Make nota­tions and mea­sure­ments of exist­ing space and obsta­cles. Select three (3) areas to begin explor­ing. Gen­er­ate ideas for each space (updated 10.28.2024). Begin by sketch­ing a sequence and lay­out of a pro­posed solu­tion to the  project. Tran­si­tion those sketches into art­work in tra­di­tional 2D design soft­ware, such as Illus­tra­tor or Pho­to­shop. Divide the work­load among mem­bers of the group.

Tem­plates, design guide­lines, images and type­face restric­tions can be found in the course LMS. Group assign­ments and space selec­tions will be pub­lished in the course LMS after Part One cri­tique (updated 10.28.2024).

Test­ing and research is impor­tant to the final out­come. While not nec­es­sar­ily part of the final out­put, sim­u­lat­ing pro­duc­tion tools is key. This may require some sig­nif­i­cant research and inquiry.Make deci­sions as to mate­ri­als, fin­ishes and pro­duc­tion tech­niques. Col­lect any nec­es­sary mate­ri­als and supplies.

Part Two

Cre­ate any and all nec­es­sary dig­i­tal files needed to pro­duce the fin­ished design solu­tions. Develop con­sis­tency tools such as art­boards, styles, and sym­bols to ensure con­sis­tency across mul­ti­ple design­ers. Cre­ate tech­ni­cally com­pat­i­ble files that are editable and flex­i­ble to gen­er­ate pro­duc­tion doc­u­ments that have nec­es­sary print­ing or cut­ting direc­tions. Pro­duce a set of reduced size images of the assigned sec­tion com­plete with a scale devise to ensure accu­racy of the solu­tion. Make any nec­es­sary revi­sions after critique.

Part Three

Trans­fer the design draw­ings to the 3D tem­plates and spaces of Adobe Dimen­sion and Aero. Cre­ate a work­ing dig­i­tal draft to review the spaces to cre­ate mock­ups to ensure indi­vid­ual plans work as part of a coher­ent set. Refine and recre­ate the solu­tions using any inter­ac­tive tools avail­able. Pro­duce a high qual­ity image for review, as well as vir­tual model for review via QR code or inter­ac­tive expe­ri­ence (updated 10.28.2024).

Part Four

Pro­duce a large scale, full color fin­ished sam­ple of the project installed in the appro­pri­ate space. Work with course instruc­tor to sched­ule prints and mate­r­ial cut­ting. Items will meed appro­pri­ate reg­is­tra­tion and tem­plat­ing to ensure accu­racy of cut­ting. Pay care­ful atten­tion to file lay­ers for both print­ing and cut­ting steps on indi­vid­ual equipment.
