Goal
The goal of the assignment is to discover the parameters, opportunities and practicalities of creating environmental graphics and wayfinding systems, as well as working in a team composed of several members.
Objective
Create virtual and physical mockups of proposed program or exhibit wall and case graphic systems for final review. Group members collaborate and share workloads.

Assignment
Working from images and tours of physical space, develop a plan for creating promotional and or informational graphics representing the client-based content. Create a needs analysis report that outlines the major audience, goals and benchmarks to measure success of the project’s eventual production. Use that needs analysis to define a proposed schedule for completion.
Create a necessary design solutions and files necessary to fulfill the solution. Use the cumulative knowledge and methodologies to solve any and all design and content challenges. Investigate interactive and experience based solutions.
Keep the ideas creative, focusing on the multiple audiences. Solutions should explore the possibilities, and not be limited by to many practical concerns at the initial stage.
As is often the case with large projects, the final product will require input and assistance from a variety of professionals across several disciplines and trades. These projects often last beyond individual involvement, so directions and documentation regarding specifications is vital. (updated 10.28.2024).
Part One
Develop a rough plan using paper materials and source images. Make notations and measurements of existing space and obstacles. Select three (3) areas to begin exploring. Generate ideas for each space (updated 10.28.2024). Begin by sketching a sequence and layout of a proposed solution to the project. Transition those sketches into artwork in traditional 2D design software, such as Illustrator or Photoshop. Divide the workload among members of the group.
Templates, design guidelines, images and typeface restrictions can be found in the course LMS. Group assignments and space selections will be published in the course LMS after Part One critique (updated 10.28.2024).
Testing and research is important to the final outcome. While not necessarily part of the final output, simulating production tools is key. This may require some significant research and inquiry.Make decisions as to materials, finishes and production techniques. Collect any necessary materials and supplies.
- Spray paint colors. Spray booth for aerosol paints in GC 2B01A.
- Laser cut paper labels
- Adhesive mounting
- White printable vinyl
- Stock, colored vinyl
- Purchased vinyl
- Special Finishes (etching, etc).
- Clear Printable vinyl (TBA)
Part Two
Create any and all necessary digital files needed to produce the finished design solutions. Develop consistency tools such as artboards, styles, and symbols to ensure consistency across multiple designers. Create technically compatible files that are editable and flexible to generate production documents that have necessary printing or cutting directions. Produce a set of reduced size images of the assigned section complete with a scale devise to ensure accuracy of the solution. Make any necessary revisions after critique.
Part Three
Transfer the design drawings to the 3D templates and spaces of Adobe Dimension and Aero. Create a working digital draft to review the spaces to create mockups to ensure individual plans work as part of a coherent set. Refine and recreate the solutions using any interactive tools available. Produce a high quality image for review, as well as virtual model for review via QR code or interactive experience (updated 10.28.2024).
Part Four
Produce a large scale, full color finished sample of the project installed in the appropriate space. Work with course instructor to schedule prints and material cutting. Items will meed appropriate registration and templating to ensure accuracy of cutting. Pay careful attention to file layers for both printing and cutting steps on individual equipment.
