Summary
Degree Plan, Registration, and Course Availability
Jason discussed the importance of following the degree plan to avoid missing classes, especially those only offered every three years. He emphasized the need for early registration for major classes and HPE courses, as they tend to fill up quickly. Jason also highlighted the necessity of taking specific classes like Graphic Design and Digital Photography, which have limited availability. He mentioned the option of summer school for those unable to take certain classes, and the possibility of taking Web Design or Motion Design online for those who have already taken them in class.
Internships, Portfolio Reviews, and Student Responsibilities
Jason discussed the requirements and process for internships and portfolio reviews for students in their major. He emphasized that students are responsible for finding their own internships and that they must be registered as students to receive credit. He also mentioned that the portfolio review, which occurs around the middle of the sophomore year, is a test to ensure students are confident and capable in their chosen major. Jason clarified that the necessary materials for the review come from specific classes, and he reassured the students that very few people fail the review.
Program Tracking, Registration, and Senior Expectations
Jason emphasizes the importance of tracking work throughout the program, especially for seniors preparing to graduate. Juniors must schedule an audit to ensure they are on track with required courses. Seniors need to fill out an application to graduate by the end of the semester, and attend a mandatory meeting on October 16th regarding expectations and senior projects. Jason mentions a potential screen printing class during the first summer session. He stresses starting with major classes first when registering, and utilizing resources like degree works and custom degree plans to stay organized. Jason also advises using unique CRN numbers to easily find classes during registration.
First Year Class Structure and Tracking
Jason discussed the structure of the first year of classes, emphasizing the importance of consultation with Mr. Kim before meeting with him. He introduced a PDF schedule outlining class offerings into the future and explained his appointment system to avoid unnecessary waiting time. Jason also addressed a question about senior projects and briefly explained the use of degree works, a system that tracks students’ progress and remaining classes. He emphasized the need for planning and tracking classes for the major program, using the plans feature to map out all required classes and track progress. Jason also mentioned the use of a degree plan sheet and the ability to schedule classes, which should be interconnected with the plans feature.
Emphasizing Self-Reliance and Problem-Solving Skills
Jason emphasized the importance of self-reliance and problem-solving skills, urging the team to familiarize themselves with the system to avoid future complications. He also encouraged them to ask intelligent questions when seeking help. Jason ended the conversation by expressing his appreciation for the team’s efforts and mentioned an upcoming email regarding major changes.
