Exercise 11.10: Secondary Motion


To explore how con­ti­nu­ity of edit­ing can cre­ate a log­i­cal inter­pre­ta­tion of space.


Con­struct and edit three ani­mated sequences of mov­ing objects from mul­ti­ple per­spec­tives and mobile framing.



Using After Effects cre­ate a main, ten (10) sec­ond ani­ma­tion of a sta­tic shape or let­ter. Next, cre­ate (5) ten (10) sec­ond com­po­si­tions. Incor­po­rate a cam­era into each new comp. Adjust the cam­er­a’s posi­tion and set­tings in each to show a dif­fer­ent per­spec­tive of the orig­i­nal, sta­tic shape or let­ter­form. Next, ani­mate the cam­era in each comp to cre­ate a dif­fer­ent type of mobile fram­ing (tilt, zoom, pan, etc).

Finally, nest these new “cam­era” ani­ma­tions into a final ten (10) sec­ond com­po­si­tion. Vary the in and out points of each ani­ma­tion to show only a por­tion if each. Edit these shots using straight cuts to con­serve time.

Pay atten­tion to how spa­tial con­ti­nu­ity is pre­served from on screen to off screen by main­tain­ing the direc­tion that the ele­ments moves between seg­ments. Con­sider using the 180-degree rule with cam­era posi­tions and the fol­low­ing basic cam­era movements:
