Assignment 01.02: Virtual 3D Packaging

Goal

The goal of this assignment is to discover virtual 3D tools for ideation and mocking up potential packaging solutions.

Objective

The objective of this assignment is to design, create and build a labeling for a fluid container container and containing box for shelf sale at a retail establishment using virtual 3D tools.

Assignment

Create all necessary labeling and a paper-board box for one of the following hand cream or lotion, hand sanitizer, or a health oriented drink. Packaging containers will be provided, but a box or point-of-purchase (POP) display will need creation. The chosen product type should target a luxury or “affordable luxury” market sector. It will need name and product line development, though using an actual (generic) product for technical information. The solution can take any conceptual approach as long as it relates to the intended audience, but must maintain a conceptual association through imagery, typography and content. The solution can use 4/c to 6/c printing (simulated), include embossing or die cuts in heavy stock. The solution must include a barcode and ingredient and/or nutrition information, which is regulated by federal law.

From a production viewpoint, the solution can take a wide range of possible conceptual approaches. The label can be full color, and possible use foil or vinyl finishing. Additional or special finishes may require additional purchases by the student and approval by the instructor.

Part One

Choose a knock-off or poorly designed product, or make up a new name. Use a real product to gather nutritional and ingredient information. Brainstorm solutions. Decide on a size and shape from the provided choices. Sketch out your ideas for the front (main viewing angle) of the package. Next, make sketches and determinations of the other sides of the package, determining location of content as well as graphic treatments. Concentrate on the conceptual integration of the mark with the wider usability of the individual pieces. Investigate special finishing treatments, such as embossing and die cuts.

Part Two

Using basic size information from the technical documents and physical samples, create 3–5 complete, flat label samples using any production software appropriate to the solution needs. Print 100% scale versions to test color, legibility, and regulatory compliance.

Part Three

Create a 3D mock up your sketch solutions using Adobe Dimension. Find a sample 3D model that simulates the final samples. Apply the labels samples to the model, making adjustments to the model to coordinate finishes, colors and textures as necessary. Create multiple variations of your solutions and present them on a simple background as a means to compare possibilities. Provide rendered images (Low or Medium Quality, JPG or PNG file) from multiple positions to accurately evaluate them before your final presentation.

Part Four

Create a final mockup of the best solution and placed on a contextual background. The final image should be a high resolution render with appropriate lighting. Plan accordingly, Rendering can take lots of battery power and time, especially at high resolutions.
